Credit note template
A credit note reduces or cancels an invoice you've already sent, for example after a return, a mistake or a discount agreed later. Fill in the free credit note template and download a PDF. No sign-up.
What to put on a credit note
- The words "Credit note" (in Australia you may see "adjustment note" for GST; you can change the title).
- A credit note number in its own series, like CN-0001, and a date.
- The original invoice number it relates to.
- Your business and your client's details, as on the original invoice.
- What's being credited, item by item, with tax if it applied.
- The total credit, and in the notes whether you'll refund it or take it off the next invoice.
Rules differ by country. When you need a credit or adjustment note, and what it must show, depends on your tax registration and where you trade. This page is general information, not tax, legal or accounting advice. Check with your accountant or tax authority, for example the ATO (Australia), GOV.UK or Your Europe (EU).
Credit note or new invoice?
Don't edit or delete an invoice you've already sent. Issue a credit note for the difference and, if needed, a new invoice. That keeps your records clear for you, your client and your accountant.
