Sole trader invoice template
As a sole trader, your invoice is your record of what you're owed. Here's what to include, whether or not you're registered for GST. Then fill in the free invoice template and download a PDF. No sign-up.
What to include
- The title "Invoice" and a unique number.
- Your name or business name, contact details and your ABN (in Australia).
- Your client's name and, for a business, their business name.
- Issue date and due date.
- What you supplied: a short description per line, with quantity and price.
- The total, and GST only if you're registered for it.
- How to pay: bank details or a payment link.
Not registered for GST (Australia)
- Title it "Invoice" and leave out the words "Tax invoice". Only GST-registered businesses issue tax invoices.
- Don't add GST. In Invoice Maker, set the tax to No tax.
- Still show your ABN. If you don't quote one, a business that pays you more than $75 (excluding GST) generally has to withhold 47% of the payment and send it to the ATO.
- A note such as "No GST has been charged" in the notes makes it clear.
- You need to register for GST once your GST turnover reaches $75,000 a year.
Registered for GST
If you're registered, a customer can ask you for a tax invoice. See the Australian tax invoice template for what it must show.
Rules differ by country. This page is general information only. Check with your accountant or tax authority. Based on ATO guidance in October 2026: withholding if an ABN is not provided. In the UK, see GOV.UK: invoicing.
Questions
Do sole traders need an ABN on invoices?
In Australia, include it. If you don't quote an ABN, a business paying you more than $75 (excluding GST) generally has to withhold 47% of the payment.
Can a sole trader issue a tax invoice without GST registration?
No. If you are not registered for GST, title it "Invoice", leave out the words "tax invoice" and don't charge GST.
What should an invoice say if there is no GST?
Show the total with no GST line. A note such as "No GST has been charged" makes it clear to your client.
