What to put on a receipt
- The word "Receipt" and your business name and contact details.
- A receipt number in its own series, like REC-0001.
- Paid on: the date you received the money.
- Payment method: cash, card, bank transfer, PayPal or cheque.
- Who paid and what they paid for, with tax if you charged it.
- Total paid, clearly shown.
- Optionally the invoice number it pays, in the reference field.
Rules differ by country. Whether a receipt can also serve as a tax invoice depends on your tax rules and what it shows. This page is general information, not tax, legal or accounting advice. Check with your accountant or tax authority, for example the ATO (Australia), GOV.UK or Your Europe (EU).
Receipt or invoice?
An invoice asks to be paid; a receipt confirms payment has been made. If a client has paid part of an invoice, you can also record the amount paid on the invoice itself and show the balance due.
